In a triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 503 patients in a hospital setting who were taking antibiotics or various reasons were randomized to receive a high colony forming unit (CFU) (17 billion) probiotic, a low CFU count (4.17 billion) probiotic, or a placebo for 10-21 days (for seven days after final antibiotic dose).1  The probiotic was taken once daily – two hours after breakfast and antibiotic administration. incidence of antibiotic – associated diarrhea (AAD) was the primary endpoint, and secondary endpoints included incidence of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), fever incidence, abdominal cramping, number of daily stools, and diarrhea duration.
